Video Review

Video review is the feedback process during production where clients and collaborators watch cuts and leave notes that shape the next edit.

What is Video Review?

Video review is the feedback stage of production where clients, collaborators or stakeholders watch work-in-progress cuts and leave notes that shape the next edit. It runs from the first rough cut through fine cuts, color and sound passes. Review is about improving the film; it is not the same as formally approving it or delivering it.

Why it matters

Most of the time lost in post-production is not spent editing. It is spent interpreting vague feedback, chasing missing opinions and reconciling contradictory notes from different people. A good review process turns "can it feel more upbeat?" into specific, actionable changes, and it gets all the feedback in before you start the next version rather than after.

Clear review also protects your scope. If notes are written down and tied to a version, it is easy to see when a request is a new idea rather than a fix, which matters when your contract includes a fixed number of revision rounds.

How it works

Effective review processes share a few traits:

• Timecoded notes. Comments pinned to a moment in the video remove ambiguity. "00:47, the logo is cut off" beats "the logo looks weird somewhere".

• One place for feedback. Notes in a single thread attached to the video, not scattered across email, text messages and calls.

• Named versions. Every cut has a version label so feedback is matched to the right file.

• A deadline per round. Ask for consolidated feedback by a date, ideally from one point of contact who gathers notes from the rest of the team.

• Low friction for viewers. Clients are more responsive when they can watch on a phone without creating an account.

Review often happens at different depths. Internal review between editor, director and colorist may need frame-accurate annotation and side-by-side version comparison. Client review is usually simpler: watch, comment, move on.

Video review vs video delivery

Review and delivery solve different problems. Review tools such as Frame.io, Dropbox Replay or Vimeo's review features are built for iteration: annotations, version stacks and approvals among people who are actively making the film. Delivery tools are built for the handoff: a polished presentation, reliable playback and original-quality downloads for the client to keep. Some teams use one tool for both; others review in a post-production tool and deliver separately. For simple client work, a light comment layer on the delivery link is often enough, while large agency jobs with many internal reviewers may benefit from a dedicated review platform.

Can clients review videos in DLVRD?

Yes, at a light level. Clients can leave comments on media in a DLVRD gallery, each stamped with the timecode they were watching, and the comments appear beneath the video. Clients do not need to log in or create an account to comment. DLVRD is focused on client-facing review and delivery rather than full post-production collaboration.
